The expectations of a cape seal are to give the owner the best of two (2) treatments together in one treatment. Chip sealing is first used to seal cracks and keep water from infiltrating into the pavement structure and then the second layer of slurry seal or micro surfacing gives the performance of an aesthetically pleasing durable wearing surface. This combination treatment will extend the life of the roadway by 8 to 10 years depending on the condition of the roadway when the treatment was constructed and the materials used in the construction. As with all preventive maintenance treatments, they are the most effective as in all surface treatments when they are placed at the right time on the right road and with the right construction practices. The success of cape seals are typically impacted by any of the following factors: pavement condition, weather, traffic, material selection, equipment calibration, construction best practices and proper inspection.
