In 2010, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) utilized the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) study the use of highway micro surfacing treatments by transportation agencies in the United States and Canada. Study found micro surfacing can provide an average service life of 7 years.
Arizona studies 17 CIR projects constructed from 1981 to 2001, finds improved IRI, better resistance to cracking, lower post-construction maintenance costs, and “significant improvements in performance.”
