Micro Surfacing Treatments

Acceptance of the mixed materials is based on the following:

• Proper mix consistency (the mix must be neither too dry or too wet)
  • Mixes that are too dry are characterized by streaking, lumping, and roughness in the mat surface.
  • Mixes that are too wet will flow excessively, not hold a straight edge line, and may also cause an asphalt rich surface with segregation.
• If the pavement owner observes anything during construction they are uncomfortable with, the pavement owner needs to have a conversation with the contractor immediately. Due to the unique characteristics of micro surfacing, it is possible the issue may be solved very quickly while still meeting the specifications of the contract.
• The buyer agency may choose to run representative samples of the aggregate and emulsion at their expense if they believe a problem exists. The buyer agency must notify the contractor immediately if any tests fail to meet the specifications.
• Micro surfacing can normally handle rolling traffic in less than one hour after placement without damage. In situations with stop and go traffic, especially during unexpectedly hot or cold weather, additional curing time may be required.
• Micro surfacing placed in cul-de-sacs may require additional curing time due to amount of handwork and maneuvering required.
• Note that a stationary vehicle that turns its wheels will most likely leave a mark on a new micro surfacing job for some time after application. This does not constitute a failure on the project.
